Shopify Markets allows a store to sell to multiple countries with separate prices, currencies, languages, and taxes. No need to create multiple stores, no need to manage multiple admin panels.

What is Shopify Markets and how does it work?

One store, many markets. Each market is a group of countries or regions with its own configuration: currency, language, selling price, taxes, shipping.

When a customer from Japan visits the store, Shopify automatically displays JPY prices, Japanese content (if translated), and applies taxes according to Japanese law. Customers from the US will see USD and US taxes.

Setting up Shopify Markets step-by-step

Step 1: Go to Settings > Markets > Add market. Select a country or group of countries.

Step 2: Set up currency for each market. You can let Shopify automatically convert exchange rates or set fixed prices for each market.

Step 3: Configure language. Translate automatically via Shopify Translate & Adapt or translate manually for better quality.

Step 4: Set up taxes for each country. Shopify has pre-configured tax settings for many countries.

Step 5: Set up international shipping. Ensure there is at least one shipping rate for each market.

Localization: language and content for each market

Automatic translation is fast but the quality is inconsistent. For important markets, it is advisable to manually translate at least the following sections: product names, product descriptions, and policy pages.

Hreflang on Shopify is automatically added when multi-language is enabled. Check with Google Search Console after setup to ensure there are no errors.

Taxes and shipping by market

EU: If selling to EU customers for more than 10,000 EUR/year, you need to register for OSS (One Stop Shop) to submit VAT. Shopify supports automatic EU tax calculation.

US: Sales tax varies by state. Shopify integrates with Avalara and TaxJar to calculate taxes accurately.

Japan, Korea: Import taxes are more complex. If using FBA or 3PL locally, taxes are much simpler.

Common mistakes when using Shopify Markets

Prices do not include local taxes, leading to customers being charged extra at checkout. Shipping rates do not cover all countries in the market. Incorrect Hreflang leads to Google indexing the wrong language. Automatic translation has grammatical errors on policy pages.

FAQ

Is Shopify Markets free?
Basic Shopify Markets is free. Shopify Markets Pro (with advanced tax and duty features) charges an additional fee per transaction.

Do I need a separate domain for each country?
Not required. You can use subfolders (hallovis.com/jp) or subdomains (jp.hallovis.com). Separate domains are better for local SEO but more complex to manage.

Which market should I start with first?
Start with the market with the closest language or where you already have customers. For Hallovis, English-speaking markets (US, Japan, Singapore) are a logical first step.
