AI is choosing shops before customers do. Is yours clear enough for a machine to pick?

14/08/2026 4 min read

AI assistants pick shops from data, not from a good-looking storefront. When delivery times, prices and return policies are unclear, the shop gets skipped — and the owner never finds out.

AI đang chọn shop trước cả khách hàng. Shop của bạn có đủ rõ để máy chọn không?

Imagine one of your regular customers. Previously, she would open Shopee, type in a keyword, scroll through dozens of products, compare prices, read reviews, and then click to buy. Now, she just tells her AI assistant one sentence: "Help me find an air fryer under 2 million VND, delivered before Friday." The rest – finding, comparing, checking stock, placing the order – the machine does it all.

Sounds like something from a few years in the future? No. It's happening right now in 2026, and at a much faster pace than many sellers realize.

What's happening?

This wave is called agentic commerce – commerce executed by AI agents on behalf of humans. Customers only set goals and limits ("trail running shoes, under $150, delivered before Friday"), while the AI agent finds, evaluates options across multiple sellers, and completes the transaction.

The big players have officially joined the game. In January 2026, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at the NRF conference, partnering with Shopify, so that AI agents can "talk" directly to seller catalogs and complete orders via a single open standard. Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout in the US at the same time. And Shopify reported that orders originating from AI searches increased 15-fold in 2025 alone.

McKinsey estimates this model could shift $3-5 trillion in global retail spending by 2030. That's a huge number, but for sellers, the more important point lies in a small detail.

That small detail is: your shop might be excluded without you ever knowing

When humans shop, a beautiful product page, a familiar brand name, an eye-catching flash sale – all of these can save you. But AI agents don't "feel" those things. They compare data.

And here's the crucial point: if your shop's delivery information, prices, and return policies are not clear and consistent, the agent will simply skip your shop – and the customer will never even see you to consider. Industry insiders call this capability "agent legibility": whether your shop is "readable" by machines.

In other words, the rules of the game are changing. For the past twenty years, e-commerce has been optimized for human eyes. From 2026 onwards, it must also be optimized for machines that make decisions based on structured data.

But wait – AI hasn't replaced humans, and AI itself has proven it

There's a less-told story amidst this craze. OpenAI once introduced instant checkout within ChatGPT. The result? The conversion rate for orders completed in the app was 3 times lower than for orders redirected to the seller's website. By March 2026, OpenAI had to remove in-app checkout and revert to the old method: directing customers to the merchant's website.

At Fortune Brainstorm Tech 2026, industry experts also frankly admitted: a host of major questions – who is responsible when an agent makes a wrong purchase, how to handle fraud – still remain unanswered.

The lesson here is clear: AI excels at execution, but judgment – understanding customers, building trust, making strategic decisions – still belongs to humans. Machines can close orders, but they cannot decide where your shop stands in the customer's mind.

This is precisely the philosophy that Hallovis has pursued from day one: AI is a tool for acceleration, while human experts play a strategic and judgmental role.

So what do Vietnamese SMEs need to do right now?

The domestic market isn't waiting for anyone. In the first half of 2026, the total sales of the four major platforms (Shopee, TikTok Shop, Lazada, Tiki) reached $11 billion, an increase of 44.1% compared to the same period – amidst increasing platform fees and tightening operational requirements. Growth is still there, but the pie is being redistributed to shops that are better prepared.

Here are three things you can start doing immediately:

First, review your shop's "readability." Are product names, attributes, prices, stock, delivery times, and return policies consistent across all channels? Are there any ambiguities that would lead a comparison machine to give you a low score?

Second, don't put all your eggs in the "beautiful interface" basket. The product page is still important for human customers, but the structured data behind it is what determines whether AI agents "select you for the next round."

Third, keep humans in their rightful place. Use AI to accelerate operations, but for decisions regarding positioning, pricing, and customer experience – let experienced individuals take the lead. ChatGPT's checkout story is a reminder that blind automation comes at a cost.

If you don't have time to do it yourself

The truth is, most SMEs don't have the staff to audit all their product data and operations for the "agent era." Hiring more people for this would be both slow and expensive.

That's exactly the problem Hallovis was created to solve. With our Express 24-72h package, our team of experts will audit your shop's readiness for the AI shopping agent wave – from standardizing product data and synchronizing delivery and return information, to recommending strategies so that your shop is both "readable" by machines and persuasive to humans. You don't need to hire anyone else.

AI agents will increasingly determine which shops customers see. The question is not whether this wave will come – but when it does, will your shop be on the selected list, or among those quietly scrolled past?

Contact Hallovis to receive an "agent-ready" audit for your shop within 72 hours.
